Abstract
Article about the much-publicized case of Mike Balser, 46, and Sharon Balser, 48, both of Springvale, who legally separated in July to regain the Medicaid coverage they lost when they were wed last November. Both are terminally ill and received Social Security disability and supplemental security income prior to their marriage, and qualified for Medicaid. But since their marriage, their combined incomes lift them above the maximum allowed for Medicaid coverage. They have separated to regain that coverage because their medical bills total more than $13,000 a month.
