Abstract

"News & Issues" piece on the fight over a possible new area code for Maine. Last week, the Public Utilities Commission (PUC) asked the Federal Communications Commission to rescind an order that could force a second area code on Maine within 30 months. According to the new North American Numbering Plan Administrator, Lockheed Martin, Maine may need the new area code by the end of 2000. But a skirmish between the PUC and Brooks Fiber, a MCI subsidiary, over conservation of unused numbers could forestall the need for another area code. There are 750,000 active numbers in Maine for a population of 1.2 million. That means Maine has at least 5.7 million unused numbers, including 3 million that are already assigned.
