Abstract
Maine law enforcers and social workers gathered in Augusta last week for a conference on child and animal abuse, which experts, including Sandi Hodge, the director of child welfare at the Maine Department of Human Services, say are linked. According to Hodge, animal abuse is being examined in a pilot project that will look at the physiological and psychological effects of abuse on young kids. Pam Ames, a Maine attorney, and Carter Luke, of the Massachusetts Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, also participated in the conference.
