Abstract
"News & Issues" piece on a band of 30 Fairfield, Oakland and Waterville residents opposed to a tire recycling plant proposed by Arthur Scholfield Inc. of Massachusetts, who appear to have won their battle. Residents opposed the plan on the grounds of noise, pollution, smell, increased road traffic, the liklihood of insects nesting in the tires and fire hazards. Mike Parker, an engineer with the Department of Environmental Protection, said Schofield's application was withdrawn Nov. 9. Brian Kittridge, a North Yarmouth environmental consultant, said the state has estimated between 40 million to 60 million tires are sitting in piles across the state, with a million more added each year.
