Abstract

"News & Issues" piece on a new land acquisition bond issue that could sail through the Legislature or be one of the major fights of the session. To be assured of support from the Sportsman's Alliance of Maine, the bill would have to guarantee hunting, trapping and fishing rights on future public lands, and allocate $5 to $10 million for more boat-launch sites. But Sandy Neily of Maine Audubon Society said environmentalists don't want to get bogged down in a debate over what uses will be allowed prior to purchase. Ron Lovaglio, the commissioner of conservation, said the state needs to get serious about ongoing funding to protect land and suggested that the comfort level for Maine taxpayers is about $3 million a year for land.
