Abstract
Walter Pepperman of Oquossuc, who represents the Maine Wolf Coalition on the advisory council to the Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife (I F & W), has asked the council to prohibit coyote snarers from clubbing trapped coyotes to death; instead requiring that they shoot them. The state appropriates $10,000 a year to reduce coyotes in certain areas where they create a problem for deer during the winter. Pepperman also questioned whether the traps were humane. The I F & W says there are about 600 people certified by the state to snare coyotes, but probably only three to six of these catch a number of coyotes.
