Abstract

"News & Issues" piece on the ice storm of January 1998, during which the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Farm Service Agency reported 104 cows died. Galen Larrabee, a past chairman of the Maine Dairy Industry Association, said some farmers are still waiting to be reimbursed by the federal government for low-interest loans they qualified for, and Central Maine Power still hasn't taken care of some loosened lines that are accidents waiting to happen. Maine farms qualified for about $2 million of the disaster funds the state was supposed to receive, but Larrabee estimates no more than $150,000 has been paid.
