Abstract

"News & Issues" piece on a unanimous vote of the Baxter State Park trustees to end park road maintenance by the Maine Department of Transportation in 2001. The vote, which is seen as critical for the park's autonomy and preservation of its wilderness character, cuts the park's last financial ties to the state, making it completely self-sustaining. The challenge now is how to pay for maintaining the park's 62.5 miles of roads and replacing bridges and culverts without the state's contribution of $80,000 a year. Revenue from visitors and income from trust funds left by park donor Percival Baxter will now provide for the park's entire budget.
