Abstract
"News & Issues" piece on the 175-year-old Whiting Village School, which will lose a third of its students next fall to accomodate a district-wide consolidation plan. Whiting's 6th through 8th grade students are to attend a new middle school in East Machias next fall. A divided School Administrative District (SAD) 77 board implemented the plan in late April. Weeks earlier, Whiting voters approved funding for a study to determine if the town should withdraw from the district. SAD 77 is comprised of the towns of East Machias and Machias, which have about 1,200 residents apiece, Cutler with about 800 and Whiting with 400.
