Abstract
"News & Issues" piece on the three miles of the Appalachian Trail that cross Saddleback property. These are three of just 25 miles of the entire, 2,160-mile trail that remain unprotected, and the last unprotected portion of the trail in Maine. The Appalachian Trail Conference (ATC) and National Park Service (NPS) have been negotiating with Saddleback for 15 years. Donald Breen, who owns Saddleback, has offered the ATC 660 acres of land on Saddleback, but ATC wants 893 acres. Robert Stanton, director of the NPS, has met with Maine's congressional delegation recently to detail plans to resolve the impasse by the end of the year.
