Abstract

"News & Issues" piece on munitions made of depleted uranium (DU), which the Lewiston-based Military Toxics Project (MTP) says have been shipped to Vieques, a small island off Puerto Rico. Two-thirds of the 33,000-acre island were acquired by the U.S. Navy shortly after World War II began. On Feb. 19, the Navy fired 263 DU shells on the island. MTP's Tara Thornton said 300 tons of DU were used during the Gulf War, and DU munitions are being used in the bombing in Kosovo. According to Thornton, the U.S. has 1.1 billion pounds of DU, a by-product of uranium enrichment. MTP is a non-profit organization founded in 1989 to help communities with sites contaminated by military activities.
