Abstract
"Other Voices" piece by Brenda M. Buchanan, a Portland attorney who represented Maine Rubber International in its efforts to move to Portland's Riverside Industrial Park, which was laid out 35 years ago, long before developers began expanding subdivisions in Riverton and North Deering. Buchanan argues that prospective homeowners should be informed not only of the presence of nearby non-residential uses, but also that buying a home in the neighborhood means buying in to the complicated but necessary social compact of zoning, which has as one of its basic tenets the notion that being there first has to count for something.
