Abstract
"News & Issues" piece on the removal of the Edwards Dam from the Kennebec River in Augusta. The Kennebec Coalition, consisting of a group of fishery advocates supported by the Natural Resources Council of Maine, American Rivers, Trout Unlimited and the Atlantic Salmon Federation, challenged Edwards Manufacturing's relicensing application to the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC), which decided in 1997 that the benefits of removing the 3.5 megawatt dam outweighed the costs. It was the first time FERC opted to decommission an electricity-producing dam over its owner's objections.
