Abstract

"News & Issues" piece on a fund-raising campaign to save a 122-acre tract of woods in South Freeport from development. The campaign has received a donation of $50,000 from Joe Wishcamper, the land's owner, to be applied toward the purchase price of $635,000, and Wishcamper has extended his deadline two months to Aug. 15. With Wishcamper's gift, the Save Freeport group has raised about $400,000 so far, according to Peter Troast, a leader of the campaign. If the campaign fails, Wishcamper will proceed with the original 38-lot subdivision, which would be Freeport's largest. Opponents have used the plan as an example of sprawl that harms the environment and the community.
