Abstract
"Continuum" piece arguing that there is no better way to fight sprawl than to enhance the viability of downtowns. Citing Kennedy Smith of the Main Street Center of the National Trust for Historic Preservation, Cox suggests that the first wave of shopping malls succeeded because of marketing, not because of pedestrian spaces or parking. And matching that marketing expertise is the key element in the Main Street approach to downtown commercial revitalization.
