Abstract

1999 Annual Agricultural Issue article focusing on Maine's agricultural niche market industry. Howard Jones, director of marketing and production development at the Maine Department of Agriculture, estimates the state's 50 farmers' markets sell about $20 million of fruits and vegetables, flowers and herbs, baked goods and specialty items a year. With focus on small, family-oriented and, in most cases, organic specialty growers; a co-op arrangement between 30 Maine restaurants and 40 Maine farmers that has already spawned off-shoots in Massachusetts and Pennsylvania; and an estimated 75 farms in Maine that are now raising North American elk and European red deer.
