Abstract

Though plaintiffs in two recent court cases in Maine received large awards, Sumner Lipman, an Augusta attorney, does not believe they signal a trend. Statistically, Lipman notes, Maine is the third least litigious state in the nation, and its verdicts are among the lowest. With references to a recent sexual discrimination case against U-Haul International tried in Bangor's U.S. District Court, which awarded the plaintiff $640,000, and a case brought against Portland landlord Joseph Soley in Portland's Cumberland County Superior Court, which awarded four plaintiffs $1.5 million. Also with comments by Judy Potter, a professor at the University of Maine School of Law.
