Abstract
"News & Issues" piece on Orono's Ayers Island, a 62-acre parcel of abandoned industrial land in the Penobscot River now dominated by a defunct textile mill, which could become the site of a high-tech business and manufacturing park linked to the University of Maine. George Markowsky of Orono, owner of Ayers Island, LLC, proposes to purchase the island from the town, undertake a huge cleanup job, and lease space to "clean" industries, such as another of his business interests, Trefoil Corporation. The mill was operated by Striar Corp. until 1996.
