Abstract

"Educational Endeavors" piece on home schooling and the "socialization" issue. Last year, 3,811 Maine children had approved home-schooling programs, which is just under two percent of the 214,000 school-age children in the state. John Maddaus, a professor of sociology and education at the University of Maine who chose to home-school his son for eighth grade, says home-schooling parents strive to involve their children in peer interaction. Typically, they have church involvement or belong to a club, such as 4-H. With several anecdotal examples of home schooling throughout the state.
