Abstract

"Maine Perspectives" piece on the sales of some of Maine's largest companies to out-of-state and out-of-the-country interests, and questioning if "bigger" really means "better." Examples include the sale of the Guy Gannett daily newspapers to a Seattle publisher, the Courier newspapers to a Dallas publisher, Unum to a Tennesee firm, Central Maine Power to a New York utility, Maine Blue Cross-Blue Shield to an Indiana insurer, and now Shop 'n Save supermarkets to a Belgian grocery giant.
