Abstract

"Capital Letter" piece on the arts as big business. In fiscal year 1996 there were 6.8 million admissions to arts events in Maine, a third to out-of-state visitors. That year, patrons paid $63 million for tickets, matched by another $40 million of donations and investment income. Counting indirect effects, the total economic impact in 1996 in the state was $147 million.
