Abstract
"Cover Story" piece on the Drug Awareness Resistance Education (DARE) program, which is incorporated into the curriculum of most Maine schools. The program has been controversial since it was developed in 1983 by then Los Angeles Police Chief Darrell Gates, whose son was addicted to heroin. DARE lessons are always taught by uniformed police officers, usually from the local community; some rural programs are led by state police. With statistics on teenage substance abuse in Maine from the Office of Substance Abuse in Augusta, an interview with teenagers at a Brewer skate park, and a related article about concerns that the DARE program is turning children into police informers.
