Abstract

"Cover Story" piece on a question concerning the medical use of marijuana, which will appear on the Nov. 2 referendum ballot across the state. Maine's Task Force on Substance Abuse estimates marijuana users in Maine are in the 100,000 range, while only a few hundred might be eligible to use it for medicinal purposes under the proposed law, which is similar to several approved in other states. All were written and shepherded through the petition process by Americans for Medical Rights. Craig Brown, the campaign manager and chief of staff for former U.S. represenative Tom Andrews, runs Mainers for Medical Rights, the national organization's local campaign arm. With observations and comments by individuals and groups both supporting and opposing the measure.
