Abstract
"News & Issues" piece on Maine loggers who are seeking public support to stop the issuance of permits that authorize Canadian woodsmen to work in Maine. About 35 Maine loggers and supporters participated in a blockade of the Blanchet-Maibec logging road at the St. Pamphile crossing on Oct. 18. Alan Hinsey of Maine's Bureau of Labor Standards said there are currently about 446 bonded Canadian laborers working in Maine's forests, plus an unknown number of aliens. Hinsey said that represents a 36 percent decrease from 1998.
