Abstract

"News & Issues" piece on the plight of foreign workers in Maine. According to Allen Hinsey of the Bureau of Labor Standards, there can be anywhere from 15,000 to 30,000 migrant agricultural workers in Maine at any given time, and most of them are from Mexico, Central America or the Southwest. Members of the Maine Rural Workers Coalition, whose members are predominantly Hispanic, recently met in Lewiston with Salvadoran economist Pedro Juan Hernandez who is on a U.S. tour hosted by the Bangor-based group Peace through Inter-American Community Action (PICA). Most agree that their problems are due to the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA).
