Abstract

Independent govenror Angus S. King is running for a second term in what has been a rather low-key campaign. King's reelection emphasis has been on jobs and education. King argues that the state needs better jobs, that are better distributed throughout the state. He is concerned about the wage decline that has affected the average worker. In the 1980s, the state ranked somewhere in the 20s among the states for wages, but then fell to 36th during the recession. King would like to see the state move back into the 20s, but acknowledges the difficulty of such an accomplishment. The governor supports passage a $20 million bond issue to promote university research and development, and believes the state needs better coordinate among its educational institutions. He takes pride in the economic development he has fostered and the role he has played passing Learning Results education. Voter rejection of the Compact for Maine Forests , is viewed as a disappointment and a missed opportunity.
