Abstract
"News & Issues" piece on Portland College, a company that is proposing to bring legitimacy to the concept of on-line college. Portland College is currently seeking degree-granting authority from the Legislature. It would be Maine's first entrant in a growing field, and the state Board of Education has recommended approval. But ten former Maine Education Services (MES) employees founded the college with knowledge they gained researching the concept while on the MES payroll and state representative Michael Brennan, D-Portland, co-chairman of the Legislature's Education Committee, says that troubles him. Others are troubled by the cost of courses, which would be about the same as out-of-state tuition at the University of Maine: $850 per tuition credit.
