Abstract

"News & Issues" piece on Maine Education Services (MES), which is inviting its chief rival, Financial Institutions Servicing (FISC), to join it in giving up claims to student loan subsidies for at least one year. FISC services loans for a consortium of savings banks and credit unions that seeks access to tax-exempt bond capital now available only to MES. Richard Pierce, president of MES, says a joint decision to not use the funds would create a "level playing field" in student lending. But Carol Sebasteanski of FISC said Pierce's offer is an empty gesture.
