Abstract

"Feature Story" piece on herring gulls whose numbers make the restoration of other native seabirds more difficult. After the Migratory Bird Treaty Act became law in Canada and the United States in 1918, the Audubon Society started restoring seabird colonies, ironically starting with gulls, which are themselves a threat to many other seabirds today. The author is involved in a study that seeks a non-lethal way to control gull populations around seabird nesting islands.
