Abstract

"New & Issues" piece about the mounting opposition to the sale of Blue Cross and Blue Shield to Anthem Insurance of Indiana that is being voiced by a powerful coalition of stakeholders that includes the Maine Medical Association, Consumers for Affordable Health Care, Maine AFL-CIO, Maine Osteopathic Association, Maine Psychiatric Association, Maine Public Health Association, and others. The group contends that with the withdrawal of Tufts Health Care from the Maine HMO scene, Blue Cross is very viable. Blue Cross admits that enrollments are up but says the situation hasn't really changed. The opponents argue that even if Blue Cross is as bad off as the company contends, Anthem should not be allowed to take control, given its controversial track record elsewhere. The stakeholders hope either to slow the sale process down to give them the chance to examine the alternatives, or for legislators to intervene in the proceedings to allow for the apointment of an advocacy panel by Al Iuppa, the state superintendent of insurance, whose office is responsible for examining the specifics of the sale.
