Abstract

Vernal, or spring, pools have been added to the list of protected habitats under the Natural Resources Protection Act, essentially creating an unfunded mandate for Maine's Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife (IF & W), which has no money to protect the seasonal pools. The listing stipulates protection to the extent the pools have been mapped and identified. IF&W's Mark McCollough has joined with wetlands scientist Aram Calhoun at Maine Audubon to develop the volunteer, Very Important Pools (VIP) program, aimed at providing detailed data to the state. Details on the program and profile of Calhoun, a University of Maine professor working on a Switzer Foundation Fellowship in 1997-98, who got additional funding and expanded her research through Maine Audubon.
