Abstract

"Furthermore. . ." piece noting that a legislative committee voted 9-4 last week to add two publicly appointment members to the seven member governing board of the Maine Education Loan Marketing Corp. (Melmac) and to prohibit Melmac from "directly or indirectly" originating student loans. Reformers on the committee wanted at least a majority of publicly appointed members and language prohibiting Melmac's trustee relationship with Peoples Heritage Bank, which allows it to skirt the statutory prohibition on orginating student loans.
