Abstract

Thomas Tureen, attorney for the Passamaquoddy tribe, maintains that a recent Rhode Island court decision vindicates his position that the 1988 federal Indian Gaming Regulatory Act superseded the 1979 Maine Indian Land Claims Settlement Act that would have prevented casino gambling, and claims that Maine's Indian tribes should be allowed to run casinos. The Legislature is currently considering a bill that would enable the Passamaquoddy tribe to operate a casino in Calais.
