Abstract
"News & Issues" piece on a decision by the U.S. Coast Guard to remove 11 East Coast icebreaking tugs from service, including three now stationed in Maine. The Guard did not include money for the tugs, an estimated $3.8 million per year, in its 2001 budget. Bangor city engineer James Ring and U.S. represenative John Baldacci, D-Maine, both told a congressional sub-committee that the Penobscot River is a winter lifeline. Though final action has not yet been taken, a member of Rep. Baldacci's staff indicated the Guard's icebreaking tugs are expected to continue in service through 2001.
