Abstract
"Cover Story" piece on the Maine Writers and Publishers Alliance (MWPA), which last month ended a year of broken promises over its unpaid bills to publishers by announcing it could afford to pay them only 10 percent of the value of books already sold. In fact, MWPA announced it is getting out of the bookselling business altogether, and would try to sell its list of 300 publishers and 50 bookstores to pay off a debt of $90,000. Gary Lawless, and Caspar Weinberger Jr., two small publishers in Maine, have teamed up to file a lien to block the sale of the book service until debts are paid. With a history of MWPA and an analysis of its crash.
