Abstract

"News & Issues" piece on the 1989 Maine Supreme Court decision to allow the privatization of Moody Beach in Wells. The Attorney General's Office has been searching for an opportunity to overturn that landmark decision and might have found one. The new case involves heirs of William Eaton, who claim they own 2,200 feet of Wells Beach from the days when Eaton formed a land company back in the 1890s and sold lots. But Justice Margaret Kravchuk has ruled that they may not bar the public from using the beach. Both sides have appealed to the Maine Supreme Court, which is scheduled to rule in September.
