Abstract
"News & Issues" piece on the East Machias River in Washington County. After almost 80 years of containment, the river will run unobstructed from its source in Pocomoonshine Lake, near the Canadian border at Baileyville, all the way to Machias Bay. On May 15, Air Force reservists from Florida, Georgia, Virginia, Ohio and other states started dismantling the crumbling 74-year-old, 230-foot long, steel-reinforced concrete dam built for Bangor Hydro in 1926 across the mouth of the East Machias, one of seven rivers identified in Gov. King's faltering salmon restoration plan. The demolition is expected to be completed by the end of July.
