Abstract

"News & Issues" piece on this year's National Kid's Count results, which were released this week. The Kid's Count data ranks Maine's rate of infant mortality second lowest in the nation. The teen birth rate dropped 35 percent between 1990 and 1997, and the rate of teen violent deaths decreased from 60 deaths per 100,000 teens in 1990 to 37 in 1997. Maine ranks tenth in the overall well-being of its kids; that's down from sixth last year. But Maine has ranked in the top ten since the survey started in 1994. With other statistics about the welfare of children in Maine and the nation.
