Abstract
"News & Issues" piece on the Kennebec Trail, a proposed 6.5-mile trail connecting Augusta and Gardiner. Construction has been delayed by an appeal filed by Ken Tuttle and Russell Cottle, two Gardiner businessmen concerned about safety because of the trail's proximity to train tracks, which in some places are only six feet apart. Augusta's city engineer, Lionel Cayer, downplays the dangers in the trail's design. The trail would share the Maine Coast Railroad's 66-foot right-of-way. Funding for the $1.5 million project is divided 80-20 between federal and local governments.
