Abstract

"News & Issues" piece on the Maine Legislature's 13 committees, which for the first time in history are authorized to meet once a month while the body is out of session. While the committees are not required to meet in the interim before next year's session, $150,000 was appropriated as part of the supplemental budget to cover legislators' per diem expenses. In addition to continued department oversight, term limits, initiated in 1996, were also a factor in the decision. So far, however, Health and Human Services is the only committee that has scheduled a regular monthly meeting through November.
