Abstract

"News & Issues" piece on a recent Land Use Regulation Commission (LURC) hearing concerning a proposal to provide new vehicular access to facilitate the launching of boats at John's Bridge in the Allagash Wilderness Waterway. The proposed access would be constructed to meet requirements of the Americans with Disabilities Act. But Lee Patterson, who is disabled, told LURC that he opposed the proposal because he believes it's important to know wilderness exists for its own value. The LURC proceeding was to consider a request from the Bureau of Parks and Lands for a development permit, the final regulatory hurdle before construction can begin. A decision will be made next month. Also with comments by those who support the proposal, including state represenative John Martin, D-Eagle Lake.
