Abstract
"News & Issues" piece on whales that get entangled in lobster gear. The number of reported entanglements is higher than ever this year for the East Coast. Bow Bowman of the Center for Coastal Studies (CCS) is the only person in Maine qualified to disentangle large whales and most of his time is spent training fishermen, members of the Coast Guard and state marine patrol officers to respond to entanglement situations. Over 300 commercial fishermen in Maine have been trained by the CCS, which has freed more than 50 large whales and is the only group on the East Coast that is federally authorized by the National Marine Fisheries Service to disentangle whales, dolphins, porpoises, seals and sea turtles.
