Abstract
"Cover Story" piece on the city of Ellsworth, the "gateway" to Downeast Maine and Acadia National Park, as it rushes to meet a fast-approaching deadline for state recognition of its comprehensive plan. City Manager Timothy King was notified in June that the State Planning Office does not recognize Ellsworth's 1992 plan because it lacks "cohesive policies and definitive strategies for commercial development along arterials that discourage sprawl". A group of 25 residents are working to revamp the plan and insure their city's future stability. With details of how the committee plans to tackle the problem as explained by Steve Lambert, the committee's co-chairman.
