Abstract
"News & Issues" piece on "bandit hikers" who are using Baxter State Park to link up with the International Appalachian Trail (IAT), and their illegal camping in the remote backcountry, which is a threat to the park's natural resources, according to park officials. When development of the 650-mile IAT began six years ago, the new trail was to continue from Mt. Katahdin to the Canadian border. But park officials demurred because of the probable increase in hiker and environmental impacts. Some hikers are known to be using the non-designated IAT trails nevertheless.
