Abstract

"News & Issues" piece on Maine's Nov. 7 statewide election, which saw a surge in the sophistication and prevalence of negative campaigning, including blind-side attacks, primarily in a deluge of late mass mailings and pre-recorded telephone pitches by outside groups. Targeted candidates were unable to respond because the mailings and automated telephone calling occurred in the final days of the campaign. With specific instances attributed to both the Republican and Democratic political parties.
