Abstract
"News & Issues" piece on the Nov. 7 defeat of Question 6 on the statewide referendum ballot, which would have extended specific civil rights protection to gays and lesbians. The measure was defeated by a narrow 2 percent margin. Yes on 6 Campaign Manager Jeanette Fruen said the campaign was underfunded and needed $1 million, instead of the roughly $500,000 it raised. State senator Susan Longley, D-Liberty, who believes the Legislature should not have mandated a popular vote on the issue, said "(s)ubjecting the protection of minority rights to a majority vote is not leadership."
