Abstract
"News & Issues" piece on former judge and state senator John Benoit, R-Rangeley, who is a member of a committee tasked with making recommendations for dealing with bomb threats in Maine schools. Some 193 false bomb threats were reported last year, and they are continuing this fall. Restorative justice is at the heart of the committee's proposal, which would require an admission of guilt by the offender, who then appears before a public body representing the school community and is required to listen to victims describe the impact of the crime. The end result is some form of public apology with a requirement to perform some public service in the school.
