Abstract

"Other Voices" piece by Alan Hutchinson, executive director of the Forest Society of Maine, responding to a Maine Times cover story by Phyllis Austin published in the Nov. 9 issue. While commending the author for an excellent article providing a thoughtful examination of the historic changes underway in the Maine woods and the concurrent evolution of large-scale forest land conservation easements, Hutchinson takes issue with Austin for viewing conservation easements as "transitional" tools, which he claims is a failure to recognize that they are, by law, permanent and are expected to run with the land in perpetuity.
