Abstract
"Cover Story" piece on a wave of legal and illegal immigrants entering Maine by way of out-of-state labor brokers. Such brokers have long supplied seasonal workers for the blueberry and broccoli harvests and for tree trimming. But they are now supplying workers to non-seasonal construction sites due to the shortage of workers created by a booming economy. As many as 3,000 undocumented workers might be in Maine at some time during the year, according to immigration authorities. Jose Soto, director of the Maine Rural Workers Coalition in Lewiston, said some have phony papers, and others have no papers. With related articles on "education or enforcement," and "the employer's side" of the story.
