Abstract
"Cover Story" piece on Herb Haynes, 70, of Winn, owner of H. C. Haynes Inc., a timber brokerage that grossed $86,123,392 in 1997, ranking 41st among Maine's top 100 revenue leaders. In the 1995 book, The Northern Forest, Haynes was labeled one of the "bad boys" of liquidation harvesting. Property-tax-transfer documents show that Haynes, along with family members, currently owns more than 30,000 acres just in the unorganized territory. They also own land in numerous Maine municipalities and in neighboring states.
